If you live in Mexico and drive here, buying a local car insurance policy works differently than in many other countries. This general guide explains what a typical policy covers, which data and documents are usually requested, and how to compare quotes.
What a typical Mexican car policy covers
- Limited coverage (“limitada”): theft of the vehicle and civil liability for damage you cause to other people or their property. It does not cover damage to your own car from a collision, rollover or vandalism.
- Broad coverage (“amplia”): everything above, plus damage to your own car. It is the most complete option and also the most expensive.
In the quotes I reviewed, the theft deductible was 10 % and the deductible for damage to the car was 5 %, with civil liability up to MXN 4,000,000. Conditions vary by insurer.
Data and documents usually requested
- The vehicle invoice (factura), to confirm make, model, year and exact version.
- The vehicle registration card (tarjeta de circulación).
- Proof of address (comprobante de domicilio).
- Photos of the vehicle.
- The main driver’s age and how the car is used.
- Insurers may also ask for an official ID.
What changes the price
The insurer, the type of coverage, the exact version of the car, your postal code and the driver’s age. In one real quote of a 2024 Nissan Versa with broad coverage, five insurers ranged from about MXN 10,400 to about MXN 20,900 per year (approximate prices).
How to compare quotes
- Compare the same type of coverage everywhere.
- Use the same car and driver details.
- Check the deductibles and the civil liability limit, not just the price.
- Ask for the conditions in writing: what the policy says is what counts.
